Chinese New Year is a focal point in Chinese communities, and Northwest Chinese Academy embraces the two week holiday with annual performances and fundraising events centered around this time of year. This year, the Year of the Horse, was no different, and brought multiple performances and a successful fundraiser.
Northwest Chinese Academy parents and friends kicked off the new year season with the school’s annual event, the Hong Bao Gala, which is a chance to celebrate the school’s successes and raise money for the future. More than 160 guests celebrated together on January 25th and joined together to raise more than $85,000 for NWCA’s operating expenses.
The students of NWCA continued the Year of the Horse celebration with performances in Beaverton and Portland. They started with a performance at Regency Park Assisted Living, where residents enjoyed Chinese song and dance performances. The grand finale of the season was a performance at the Beaverton library, where our preschool through 4th graders showcased routines they rehearsed for months. They wowed family and friends with impressive performances in Chinese, Spanish and English, incorporating dance, song, poetry and even sign language. The upper English classes performed two scenes from Shakespeare’s A Midsummer’s Night Dream.
